The purpose of the course
After attending this course, you will know how food is produced in the field in Finland. You will get to know different crops and production inputs to get an overall idea of arable farming.

You know how to consider the environment in arable farming. You know the characteristics of different crops from the point of view of cultivation and crop use. You know the biology of different groups of pests so that you can take them into account in your farming activities. You can make a germination test for cereals and calculate the required amount of seed. You identify the growth rates of cereals by knowing what cultivation measures can be taken at different growth rates. You will identify the most important crops and their seeds.

Basics of agriculture: different production methods, cultivation conditions in Finland, production regulations in the field, field water management, cultivability of soil types, land structure, determination of fertility, use of various soil improvers and fertilizers, basics of plant protection, environmental effects of arable farming . Identification of crops and their seeds.

You know the growth factors of plants and the climatic conditions in Finland in terms of plant growth.

Enough 1:
The student knows the characteristics of Finnish arable farming and is acquainted with the regulations of production. The student is able to define different production methods. The student understands the role of arable farming as part of food production and the circular economy. The student is familiar with the environmental impact of arable farming. The student knows the principles of cultivation and the use of different inputs in terms of quantity and quality in order to obtain a good harvest. The student knows the characteristics of different crops from the perspective of cultivation and crop use. The student knows the biology of different pest groups so that he can take them into account in cultivation activities. The student is able to determine the germination of cereals and calculate the required amount of seed. The student knows the growth rates of cereals, knowing what cultivation measures can be taken at different growth rates. The student identifies crops and their seeds at an adequate level. Exercises have been approved, but they contain shortcomings.

Satisfactory 2:
The student knows the characteristics of Finnish arable farming and is acquainted with the regulations of production. The student is able to define different production methods. The student understands the role of arable farming as part of food production and the circular economy. The student is familiar with the environmental impact of arable farming. Teaching methods

It is a completely online implementation, in which case the learning environment supports independent learning. In a learning environment, students study through videos and written material while doing assignments. The course involves exercises that can be completed with tools typically found at home. The student receives feedback on each task done.

Teaching methods

This is a day-to-day implementation, so studying contact lessons together supports independent study. In the learning environment, students study using video lectures, videos and written material. Contact lessons cover theory, assignments and practical work in the course content. The student receives feedback on each completed assignment. At the end of the course there is a course exam.

Practical training and working life connections

The course includes a one-day study trip.

Exam dates and retake possibilities

The course exam held in class will be held on November 28, 2023 at 8:15-10:15. The dates of the retake exams (2 pcs) are agreed upon at the start of class.

Student workload

The course covers 135 hours of student work. 40 hours of this are devoted to contact teaching and visit to the farm, the rest being spent on independent study and the exam.

Teaching methods

This is a multimode implementation, so the emphasis is on independent study. In the learning environment, students study using video lectures, videos and written material. Contact classes are used for assignments and practical work in the course content. The student receives feedback on each completed assignment. At the end of the course there is a course exam.

Practical training and working life connections

The course includes a one-day study trip.

Exam dates and retake possibilities

The course exam held in class will be held on November 15, 2024 at 12:45-14:15. The dates of the retake exams (2 pcs) are agreed upon at the start of class.

Student workload

The course covers 135 hours of student work. 32 hours of this are devoted to contact teaching and visit to the farm, the rest being spent on independent study.

The grade of the course is determined by continuous assessment, ie the assignments to be returned are evaluated. Exam is 30% of grade.

Teaching methods

This is a multimode implementation, so the emphasis is on independent study. In the learning environment, students study using video lectures, videos and written material. Contact classes are used for assignments and practical work in the course content. The student receives feedback on each completed assignment. At the end of the course there is a course exam.

Exam dates and retake possibilities

The course exam held in class will be held on 1/12/2023 at 8:15-10:15. The dates of the retake exams (2 pcs) are agreed upon at the start of class.

The scope of the course is 135 hours of student work. Of this, 36 hours are reserved for contact teaching and site visits, the rest of the time is used for independent study alone or in a group.

Content scheduling

The grade of the course is determined by continuous assessment, ie the assignments to be returned are evaluated. Exam is 30% of grade.

Teaching methods

This is a day-to-day implementation, so studying contact lessons together supports independent study. In the learning environment, students study using video lectures, videos and written material. Contact lessons cover theory, assignments and practical work in the course content. The student receives feedback on each completed assignment. At the end of the course there is a course exam.

Practical training and working life connections

The course includes a visit to the farm.

Exam dates and retake possibilities

The online exam will be held in early December 2022, the 1st re-exam and the 2nd re-exam in December before the end of the semester.

Student workload

The course covers 135 hours of student work. 40 hours of this are devoted to contact teaching and visit to the farm, the rest being spent on independent study and the exam.

The grade of the course is determined by continuous assessment, ie the assignments to be returned are evaluated. Exam is 30% of grade.

Teaching methods

The student knows the growth rates of cereals, knowing what cultivation measures can be taken at different growth rates. The student identifies crops and their seeds at an adequate level. Exercises have been approved, but they contain shortcomings.

The student knows the characteristics of Finnish arable farming and is acquainted with the regulations of production. The student is able to define different production methods.
