Objective

Purpose of the course
You learn the structure of backbone networks, protocols and their design principles. You learn how to search for information from industry standards and manuals in order to solve information network problems in backbone networks.

Competences of the course
EUR-ACE: Knowledge and understanding
EUR-ACE: Engineering practice
EUR-ACE: Investigations and information retrieval

Competence goal of the course
You know the protocols and principles of data transmission in backbone networks. You know the technologies and protocols used in backbone networks, and know how to configure them. You know how to plan the configurations for the protocols needed to form the backbone network. You know how to search for information on industry standards and device manufacturers' manuals to solve problems in backbone networks. You know how backbone networks are connected to customers' data center and local area networks, as well as to other backbone networks.

Content

There are several technologies used in backbone networks and their development is continuous. The implementation of the study course describes its current, essential technologies. This list described in the course description is indicative:
- Further details of the internal routing of the backbone network (Open Shorest Path First, Intermediate System to Intermediate System and Internal Border Gateway Protocol)
- More detailed details of routing connecting backbone networks (External Border Gateway Protocol, BGP Metrics)
- Technologies that differentiate backbone customer traffic and speed up traffic control (LDP, MPLS-VPN, L2circuit, VPLS, Logical-systems, Routing-instances, Virtual Routing and Forwarding)
- Traffic prioritization of backbone networks (Quality of Service, DiffServ, DSCP)
- Traffic control of backbone networks (Traffic Engineering, Segment Routing)
