Objective

Purpose of the course:
The knowledge and skills in this course will enable you to assess the need for building renovation and to understand the need for and content of structural health surveys.

Course competences:
Multidisciplinary competences: Ability to follow scientific and technological developments.
Practical application of technology: Ability to identify and apply codes of practice and safety regulations in one's field.

Course objective:
Identify the buildings of different periods and the typical structures used in them. You will know the risk structures of the different periods. You will know the main causes of damage to building components and you will be able to apply knowledge of building physics to assess the thermal and moisture performance of structures.. You will be able to analyse the contents of a condition survey/assessment report and understand the criteria for selecting a repair method. These are also the basic tasks of the course.

Old buildings and structural solutions, risk structures, damage phenomena, condition assessments, condition surveys, repair methods, building physics analysis of structures.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Intermediate (1): The student knows and recognises the topics described in the learning outcomes of the course and is able to perform the tasks according to the learning outcomes of the course: (Old buildings and structural solutions and risk structures, damage phenomena, condition assessments and condition studies, repair methods and building physics analysis of structures). Students can demonstrate their competence by reading the topics related to the objectives.

Satisfactory (2): The student knows, identifies and understands the issues described in the learning objectives of the course. The student can demonstrate competence by describing the topics covered in the course in a systematic way.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): the student has achieved the learning objectives of the course and is able to demonstrate his/her knowledge in a clear and understandable way. The student is able to articulate the learning in a clear and concise manner and to apply it to practical tasks.

Excellent (4). The student is able to describe the effects of different solutions and to make informed choices between alternatives.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): the student has achieved the learning objectives of the course with excellent results. In addition, the student is able to examine the topics of the course theoretically and apply them critically in practice. Competence is demonstrated in a coherent and multidimensional manner.
