Objective
The students know the opportunities for a sustainable utilization of domestic biomass resources for energy. They are able to determine the amount of biomass producible in a specific area of field, forest and swamp, and to select the production methods suitable for each target. They are familiar with the environmental impacts of energy raw material production and use, and can select solutions which influence the sustainability of production.
Content
- production and utilization of agrobiomass, peat and wood for energy
- environmental impacts of production and use
Qualifications
Basics of forest management and regeneration
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Adequate learner (1) knows the utilization potential of domestic biomass resources for energy in Finland
Satisfactory learner (2), in addition to the aforementioned, can identify work methods which are applicable to the utilization of biomass resources in different areas and knows the direct environmental impacts of the utilization of biomass resources
Good learner (3), in addition to the aforementioned, can estimate the work input and costs needed for biofuel production, as well as production volumes and can compare alternative methods of utilization
Very good learner (4), in addition to the aforementioned, can estimate the opportunities to influence the quantity and quality of environmental impact in the production and determine the impacts of the production and use of biomass for energy at the local level
Excellent learner (5), in addition to the aforementioned, can assess the long-term effects of the utilization of biomass for energy on soil, water and air and apply research data on the topic to problem-solving
