Objective
The students master the basics of material technology and the changes of inner structure and mechanical properties by alloying and different kind of mechanical treatments and heat treatments. They recognize different material groups, their properties and general technical applications used in mechanical engineering.
EA-IV EUR-ACE Investigations: The students have the ability to conduct appropriate experiments, interpret the data and draw conclusions. Their laboratory skills are improved.
EA-ER EUR-ACE Engineering practice: The students have the ability to integrate theory and practice when solving problems in material technology.
TKSU Competence in design: The students are familiar with the most common structural materials and their properties.
YHTVI Communication skills: The students are able to communicate well in writing in their mother tongue.
Content
Material inner structure and its affect to properties. The affect of working and heat treatments on material properties. Material groups and laboratory exercises.

Excellent (5): The student masters the basic terminology in material science. He can apply the knowledge how changes in inner structure by alloying and treatments affect mechanical properties and material selection.
Very good (4): The student masters the basic terminology in material science. He is familiar with how changes in inner structure by alloying and treatments affect mechanical properties and material selection but interpreting of the essential skills in practice is still quite inadequate.
Good (3): The student is familiar with basic terminology in material science and how changes in inner structure by alloying and treatments affect mechanical properties and material selection but interpreting of the essential skills in practice is still quite inadequate.
Satisfactory (2): The student is familiar with the basic terminology in material science and can interpret diagrams and fracture surfaces but interpreting of the essential skills in practice is still quite inadequate.

Assessment is based on the exam, assignments and laboratory work.
