Objective

The students are able to write a thesis summary, i.e. the abstract, independently, using aids. The abstract meets the basic requirements of academic style.

Content

The structures essential in academic writing, particularly articles, prepositions, punctuation, and participial phrases including the stylistic characteristics of the register.

Composing an abstract of a thesis or an article written in the academic style.

Qualifications

The students have a command of the basic structures of English including the most essential terminology of their own fields of study and are well aware of the register required in academic writing.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Assessment methods are based on learning objectives. Assessment is qualitative, based on a criteria and the student's self-assessment plays an important role in it.

5 (Excellent)
The students can produce very fluent and accurate text naturally related to the topic and fully covering it. The text is a consistent whole. The vocabulary, style and register are in accordance with the topic. Occasional grammatical mistakes may occur excluding spelling.

4 (Very good)
The students can produce fluent and accurate text naturally related to the topic fully covering it.
The text is a consistent whole. The vocabulary, style and register are in accordance with the topic. Occasional grammatical mistakes may occur with only few of them in spelling.

3 (Good)
The students can produce relatively fluent and accurate text mostly naturally related to the topic well covering it. The text is a relatively consistent whole. The vocabulary, style and register are, mostly, in accordance with the topic. Minor grammatical mistakes may occur without disturbing communication.

2 (Satisfactory)
The students can produce understandable text with an appropriate content related to the topic mainly covering it. The text is not necessarily fluent and is partly fragmented. The use of vocabulary, style and register is partially defective, which sometimes makes communication difficult.

1 (Pass)
The students can only produce text that is difficult to understand, concise and superficially related to the topic. The text is discontinuous and fragmented. The style and/or register inappropriate for the topic including the numerous grammatical mistakes make it very difficult to understand the text.

0 (Fail)
The students do not follow the instructions for an assignment or do not reach the minimum objectives for Grade 1.
