Objective

The object of the course:
You will learn the basics of the German language and the culture of German speaking countries. By the end of the course, you can manage simple everyday communication situations in German. You know the most common polite phrases in German. You understand the cultural differences between your home country and German speaking countries.

The course prepares and equips you to act and work in an international and multicultural environment.

You can interact in simple and routine everyday situations, although problems in pronunciation and pauses may affect communication. You understand the main points of a simple text. You are able to write a simple text using the vocabulary and structures you have learned on the course. You understand the cultural differences between your home country and German.

Do you want to learn the basics of the German language and get to know the culture of German-speaking countries?

This course is just for you!

In this course, you will learn:

- The basics of German pronunciation, so you can pronounce words correctly and understandably.
- How to use German in everyday interactions (such as greetings, introductions, polite phrases, and transactional situations).
- The distinctive features of the culture of German-speaking countries.

The course also covers basic German grammar, so you will learn:

- Numbers
- Personal pronouns
- How to form questions
- The word order in main clauses
- Present tense conjugation of verbs
- The genders of nouns and the use of articles
- The use of the accusative case

You understand basic expressions from slow and clear speech. You can interact in simple and routine everyday situations, although problems in pronunciation and pauses may affect communication. You understand simple texts on familiar topics. You can write a simple text. There may still be some faltering in the use of vocabulary and language structures.

Fail:
The level of competence does not reach the minimum requirements, or the assignments and exams of the course have not been successfully completed.

NB! If you need a numerical grade (1 - 5), it can be obtained on a separate certificate. The need for a numerical assessment must be communicated to the teacher at the beginning of the course. After the first assessed assignment or test, it is no longer possible to change the grading scale from pass-fail to a numerical scale.

Opintojakson aikataulun ja muut materiaalit löydät Moodle-kurssiltamme.
Opiskelu tapahtuu ZOOM-tunneilla, mutta on hyvä varata kalenteristasi itsenäiselle opiskelulle aikaa myös muuna ajankohtana. Uuden kielen opiskelu vaatii paljon harjoittelua ja toistoa. ZOOM-webinaareissa käymme läpi kirjan kappaleita, ääntämistä, sanastoa ja kielioppia. Teemme harjoituksia itsenäisesti ja yhdessä (pienessä ryhmässä tai parin kanssa), jolloin opettaja ohjaa, neuvoo ja antaa henkilökohtaista palautetta.

ZOOM-tunnit ovat tiistaisin klo 16.30-18.15 (ilman taukoa; 16.30-18.30 tauon kanssa).

Teacher provides the material for the course.

Teaching methods

Contact lectures, learning assignments, tests or exams.
The teaching language of this implementation is English. The course content is the same as in Saksa 1.

The topics are e.g.:
- basics of pronounciation
- greetings, basic phrases, introducing oneself
- regular and irregular verbs in the present tense, questions, personal pronouns, word order, accusative case, nouns
- family, hobbies, food, at a restaurant, in the supermarket, numbers, expressions of time, studies

Exam dates and retake possibilities

Tests during the course. Final exam 3.12.2024. Exam retakes in Exam studio.
Resit 1: 31.1.2025
Resit 2: 28.2.2025

Student workload

Classroom teaching 30-50h (depending on the implementation), independent/virtual work 81-103h (depending on the implementation), exams 2-4h (depending on the implementation).
Total 135h (One ECTS equals 27h of student work)
