Objective

The object of the course:
You will continue to learn the basics of the French language and the culture of French speaking countries. By the end of the course, you are able to use simple phrases and sentences in spoken and written production. You expand your vocabulary and knowledge of language structures needed in everyday situations. You will be able to act in accordance with the norms of French culture in typical communication situations.

Course competences:
The course prepares and equips you to act and work in an international and multicultural environment.

The learning objectives of the course:
You can interact in simple and routine everyday situations, although problems in pronunciation and pauses may affect communication. You understand the main points of a simple text. You are able to write a simple text using the vocabulary and structures you have learned on the course. You understand the cultural differences between your home country and France.

Content

French speaking and writing skills needed in common everyday situations.

Pronunciation

Communication: Telling about yourself, describing past experiences, housework, travelling, clothes, studies and work

Grammar: Central grammar includes the past tense (le passé composé) of regular and irregular verbs, near future, present progressive, near past, the place and form of adjectives and adverbs, ordinal numbers

Cultural knowledge: cultural features of French speaking countries.

Qualifications

French for beginners 1 (5 ECTS) at JAMK or CEFR level A1 (https://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/sites/default/files/cefr-en.pdf) or successfully completed French courses 1–2 in a Finnish high school as a B3-language.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Pass:
You understand basic expressions from slow and clear speech. You can interact in simple and routine everyday situations, although problems in pronunciation and pauses may affect communication. You understand simple texts on familiar topics. You can write a simple text. There may still be some faltering in the use of vocabulary and language structures.

Fail:
The level of competence does not reach the minimum requirements, or the assignments and exams of the course have not been successfully completed.

NB! If you need a numerical grade (1 - 5), it can be obtained on a separate certificate. The need for a numerical assessment must be communicated to the teacher at the beginning of the course. After the first assessed assignment or test, it is no longer possible to change the grading scale from pass-fail to a numerical scale.

The course is well suited for anyone with some basic knowledge in French (level A1.1 of The Common European Reference for Languages) and who would like to continue their French studies.

Learning materials and recommended literature

The digital course material will be available on Moodle environment.

Teaching methods

Online implementation: 4th Sep - 11th Dec 2024
Zoom lectures on Wednesdays at 16.00-18.30

During the course you will attend weekly Zoom lectures (expected attendance ~80%) and practice independently by completing online exercises. In addition, there will be 2-3 assignments which will be returned to the teacher.

Assessment: 2 smaller mid-term tests (pass/fail) + a short oral exam (pass/fail) at the end of the course. The oral exam will be done in pairs/small groups.

Important! From autumn 2024 onwards, the course will be graded on a pass/fail scale. If you want a numerical assessment (1 - 5), it is possible to get it as a separate certificate. The need for a numerical assessment must be communicated to the teacher at the beginning of the course. The grading scale cannot be changed from pass/fail to numerical after the first assignment or exam has been marked.

Exam dates and retake possibilities

2 smaller mid-term tests + oral test at the end of the course.

Re-sit opportunities in Dec 2024 / Jan 2025. The teacher will inform the exact times at the beginning of the course.

35h of teaching with 97h of independent work at home, exams 3h.
