Objectives

The basic knowledge of the strength of materials is essential to constructions engineering. You gain the basic knowledge of strength of materials and you can do static sizing of simple structures with the help of manuals and sizing table cases. You can form a mechanical model from a structure under inspection and you can solve the tensions, stresses and deformations, affecting it. You can perceive cases which require more precise and profound strength inspection. You start the studies from the basic concept and proceed to apply them to more challenging calculations of strength of materials.

Knowledge and Understanding:
You understand the principles of strength of materials and how they are based to the statics, mathematics and physics.

Engineering practice:
You can apply the principles of strength of materials to solve practical engineering problems by using the standardized calculation methods.

Multidisciplinary competences:
You understand the effect of the strength of materials to environmental and economic issues. You can also gather and interpret relevant information for the calculation of strength of materials.

Content

Tensions and deformations caused by normal and shear forces and also by bending moment, torque and buckling and the calculations method for them.

Teaching methods

Recorded lectures and calculation examples. Assignments are based by problem-based learning. As help when you do your assignments you can use recorded lectures, examples, discussion list and files in your studying environment. You can do assignments individually or in groups, but you must always return the assignments individually. In distance learning you can join the webinars to get help in the assignments. In contact method you can get help for the assignments in the workshops. In the middle of the course, you give anonymous feedback.

Exam dates and retake possibilities

Exam and two resists based on degree regulations. In distance learning you have the exam in JAMK campus or exam studio or invigilated exam in network (using Zoom).

Student workload

Recorded lectures and examples 28 h, learning assignments 28 h either online or by distance learning in study environment and independent learning work 106 h. Total 162 h learning work.

Evaluation scale

0-5

Evaluation criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

To get grade 0-5 you have to take the exam. There is exam and two resits in the course.

Adequate (1): You are familiar with the basic knowledge and terminology but in dimensioning of basic beam structures your skills are clearly inadequate. You can solve simple basic problems in an adequate manner.

Satisfactory (2): You are familiar with the basic knowledge and terminology of stresses and strains but in dimensioning of basic beam structures your skills are inadequate. You can satisfactorily solve simple basic problems.

Evaluation criteria, good (3-4)

Good (3): You are familiar with the knowledge of dimensioning beam structures and you can apply the knowledge acquired to simple structures to solve tensions and strains. You also understand those situations which require more precise and profound strength inspection.

Very good (4): You masters the essential knowledge of dimensioning beam structures and you can apply the knowledge acquired to basic structures to solve tensions and strains. You also understand those situations which require more precise and profound strength inspection.

Evaluation criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): You masters the essential knowledge of dimensioning beam structures and you can apply the knowledge acquired in an innovative manner to more challenging structures to solve tensions and strains. You also understand those situations which require more precise and profound strength inspection.

Evaluation criteria, pass/failed

Outside of the study programs:

Approved: You must calculate at least 75% of homework and you must get answers which are relatively correct from each week. You must get correct answer for at least 50% of the homework from each week.

Prerequisites

Handling powers and roots, reducing expressions, application of right and oblique triangle trigonometry, vector calculation, solving first and second degree polynomial equations and radical, exponential and logarithmic equations and pairs and sets of equations.
SI unit system, transformation of units, magnitude calculation, Newton’s laws, friction and the elements of statics. Creating a mechanical model from a structure under inspection and solving the forces and stresses, affecting it

Further information

Studies are also offered to students outside of the study programs by Open University of Applied Sciences JAMK as well as through CampusOnline to the students of other Universities of Applied Sciences and Universities.
