Objectives

The purpose is to increase your understanding and application of influencing skills to promote the development of the practitioner role in professional, and political contexts on advanced level. Another purpose is to deepen your expertise and influencing skills to promote resilience and dialogue to develop and manage the comprehensive well-being of a work community.

Competences: Operating in a workplace, Professional leadership

By the end of a course, you will be able to identify and apply effectively different kinds of influencing skills such as rational persuasion, coalition building, assertiveness, dialogue and negotiation. You know how to identify resistance and to solve situations by using your influencing skills. You have competence to advocate for and participate in creating an organization that supports open communication, collaborative practice and co-production. You can contribute to multi-professional teams and networks as a mentor, role model, and trainer of advanced practice in your own field of expertise by using your professional expertise and negotiating skills. Additionally, you are able to reflect and evaluate your own professional expertise to identify areas for improvement and to set goals for continuing professional development.

Content

Definition and importance of influencing skills in professional development.

Different types of negotiating and influencing skills in social and healthcare context (eg., rational persuasion, coalition building, assertiveness, dialogue and negotiation).

Developing professional expertise by reflecting and improving influencing skills (e.g., pitch talk).

Understanding your audience: multidisciplinary teams, networks and coworkers.

Strategies for creating a positive work environment, collaboration and co-production.

Recognizing resistance and strategies to overcome it.

Building effective relationships at work.

Resources for further development of professional expertise and influencing skills (e.g., self-reflection).

Content scheduling

Student can make a personal roadmap for this course. Structure and timing of the course assignments will be agreed during the first contact lesson.

Pass, fail

Pass: You can explain and apply the main influencing skills used in your own field of expertise. You can identify resistance and reflect on the ways to work with it. You can analyse the importance of collaborative practice, multi-professional teams and networks, and you identify your possibilities to influence them. You can act as a role model and mentor by using the influencing skills covered on the course. You possess knowledge and skills to set goals for continued professional development in your own area of expertise. Additionally, you participate actively in webinars as well as in-person classes and do your home tasks and the final assignment according to given instructions.

Prerequisites

Bachelor degree in healthcare, social care, nursing or rehabilitation.
