Objectives
You are able to manage large and complicated PLC- based automation systems. You can independently solve problems in existing systems and systems being developed.
EUR-ACE ENGINEERING PRACTICE
You are able to implement control applications using programmable logic and process control systems. You are able to select and use appropriate equipment, tools and methods. You are able to combine theory and practice to solve engineering problems in PLC projects. You have an understanding of applicable techniques and methods and of their limitations.
EUR-ACE COMMUNICATION AND TEAM-WORKING
You have ability to communicate effectively information, ideas, problems and solutions with the engineering community in a national and an international context. You have ability to function effectively as an individual and as a member of a team and as an entrepreneurship.

Time and location
Autumn 2024
Contacts at the main campus. Attendance required. Course cannot be taken remotely.
Learning materials and recommended literature
Häkkinen, V-M. 2020. Programmable Logic Controllers. Course material. JAMK, technology.
Teaching methods
Automation software engineering is problem-oriented and therefore problem based learning is also used as a learning method. It takes place through contact hours, project work and independent work.
Practical training and working life connections
work-related project
Exam dates and retake possibilities
Evaluation discussion in project return. There is no exam.
Alternative completion methods
The course includes exercises and laboratory work related to automation hardware design. The procedures for assessment are described in the examination regulations and the study guide. The course tutor will provide further information on any specific procedures for the course.
Student workload
Lectures and project work 100 h, independent study 35 h, total 135 hours work for student
Content scheduling
Every week there is both lecturing and project work.
Further information for students
Self-assessment through project work. Continuous peer review as project work progresses. The evaluation decision is based on a 100% evaluation discussion about the project work.
Evaluation scale
0-5
Evaluation criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
Sufficient (1): You identify the basic knowledge, terminology and team-working skills but in the interpreting of the essential concepts the skills are still inadequate.
Satisfactory (2): You are familiar with the basic knowledge, terminology and team-working skills but it’s challenging to use them in solving the problems.
Evaluation criteria, good (3-4)
Good (3): You can manage complicated PLC projects as a team member. Your skills are needed and used to get the project done.
Very good (4): You master the essential PLC knowledge and can apply it. Your skills are helping the whole team.
Evaluation criteria, excellent (5)
Excellent (5): You master the essential knowledge and can apply the knowledge acquired in a creative and innovative manner. The project team would not manage as well without your skills.
