Bachelor's Degree Programme in Nursing
Key learning outcomes
The studies offer you the opportunity to build your nursing competence with a focus on promoting well-being and health of people in a multiprofessional healthcare team. The English-language degree programme and its foreign students create an international classroom where you learn cultural care.
You learn to plan, implement, and develop the care of patients. You are trained to promote health and prevent diseases, provide care, support, guidance, and rehabilitation. You can operate flexibly in multi-professional and multi-cultural settings, in providing care to individuals, families and communities.
The overall learning outcome is that when you graduate, you have professional knowledge in nursing and can critically apply your knowledge in the diverse, changing, and digital environments where nursing duties take place.
Education content and professional growth and know-how
As a nursing student, you study practically oriented. Learning happens in classrooms, digital environments, and in clinical practice. Practice in clinical settings, for example, at health centres, hospitals, and service homes, is a large part of your studies. In the simulation facilities, you learn nursing skills in a safe environment with your fellow students.
During the studies, you go through varied theory and clinical skills related to nursing and other supporting fields. The first-year studies give you skills in the basics of nursing, social and health care environments, well-being, health promotion and functional ability. During the second and third year, you begin to study different nursing areas, from babies to older people. During the last half-year, you will deepen your professional competence in the area you prefer. In addition, the studies at this stage contain leadership, management, and entrepreneurship. A bachelor’s thesis develops your skills in research, development, and innovation work as part of the degree programme.
Flexible studies
The studies are implemented full-time during weekdays. It is possible to make a personal learning plan with your career tutor.
You can choose your alternative or elective studies from EduFutura partner institutions (University of Jyväskylä and Gradia) and international studies from European EUDRES higher education institutions. You can also choose from Finnish and foreign partner universities, such as other universities of applied sciences and universities. You can apply for accreditation of higher education studies that you have completed elsewhere.
Working life oriented learning
Your studies will combine theory and practice. Clinical practice, thesis and projects will promote professional and clinical skills. At Jamk University of Applied Sciences, the operating model for working life-oriented and student-driven learning is called Jamk Future Factory®. It combines working life operators, students, Jamk experts and working life-oriented lab-environments and other learning environments. In addition to multidisciplinary and practical project studies, it offers students a chance to develop their future practical skills, career paths and networks.
Studification is also among the options offered by working life-oriented learning. It refers to combining work, clinical practice or other activities with studies. Studification involves students drafting a studification plan and documenting it in the manner agreed with their teacher.
Career opportunities and employment
After graduation, you can work in different public and/or private social and healthcare settings or in non-governmental organisations. The workplaces can vary from health centres, outpatient units, different hospital wards, and homecare, to private caring facilities. Studies prepare you to work on projects or as an entrepreneur.
Qualifications
The Bachelor of Healthcare title is awarded upon completion of the degree and its requirements.
In accordance with the act (559/949), the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira) grants, upon application, the right to practice as a licensed nurse and authorises the use of the occupational title of registered nurse.
The education meets the European Union directives (2013/55/EY) in recognising the professional competences for nursing.
Further studies
After graduating and gaining at least two years of work experience, you may apply for a master's degree level education. You can continue your studies by applying for e.g. Master's degree programmes in universities, vocational teacher education or Master's degree programmes abroad. The university of applied sciences offers opportunities for competence development in various institutes, such as the open university of applied sciences, specialisation training and work-oriented continuing education.
Education planning
The key learning outcomes of the degree programme in Nursing are based on the Jamk curriculum work and on the national and international qualifications for the degree programme. Curriculum planning takes place alongside working life and with other students.
