Code: TTC5020
Credits
5 op
Teaching language
- Finnish
Responsible person
- Karo Saharinen
Objective
Purpose of the course
You learn the protocols of local area networks, their structure and the principles of their design. You learn how to search for information from industry standards and manuals in order to solve information network problems in local area networks.
EUR-ACE: Knowledge and understanding
EUR-ACE: Engineering practice
EUR-ACE: Investigations and information retrieval
Competence goal of the course
You know the protocols and principles of data transfer in local area networks. You know the technologies and protocols used in local area networks, and know how to configure them. You know how to plan local area networks using different data network devices. You know how LANs connect different terminal devices to the backbone network.
Content
There are several technologies used in local area networks and their development is continuous. The implementation of the study course describes its current, essential technologies. This list described in the course description is indicative:
- Different variations of the Spanning Tree protocol (MSTP, PVLANSTP)
- LAN switch management technologies (e.g. Virtual-chassis/Stacking)
- More detailed planning of virtual LANs (Ethernet/VLAN, PVLAN, QinQ)
- Wireless LANs (WLAN controller, Mesh)
- Routing technical details of local area networks (L3 connection, priorities of routing protocols and more precise route selection, e.g. Longest prefix, etc.)
- OSI model layer 2 security (Network Access Control, L2 security, IPv6 L2 features)
Qualifications
Data networks
