Objective
Four-part harmony and counterpoint 2:
The students can write from single to many-voice textures in the styles from Romanticism to the present day in homophonic and contrapuntal styles.
Arrangement:
The students knows the main instruments and their characteristics and use in diverse ensembles. He/She has the basic skills to write transcriptions and many-sided arrangements for diverse ensembles.
Content
Four-part harmony and counterpoint 2:
Western Music structures, counterpoint, and harmonisation as melodic complements. Divided into two parts: a) Harmony of the Romantic era and b) 20th Century's harmonic means.
Arranging:
The knowledge of the main instruments and their use in diverse ensembles. 1st semester consists of the knowledge of instruments and writing for them. The 2nd semester consists of doing the actual arrangements. The course also goes thru the most common notation progams (for ex. Finale or Sibelius)and they are used for the arrangements.

Music writing 1 (KMZM0104)or corresponding tested knowledge
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Four-part harmony and counterpoint 2:
One exam (part a, Harmony of the Romantic era) and short written/composed samples (part b, 20th century harmony). Exam is 50% and the samples another 50%.
Passing 1
The student knows the basics of harmony, but has difficulties in several different areas.
Satisfactory 2
The student knows the basics of harmony. He/She is able to write using main techniques, remaining within a certain stylistic period. There are some flaws in smaller details and some also in larger ones.
Arranging:
The evaluation of arranging is made on the basis of one exam plus 4-5 arrangement samples.
Passing 1
The student doesn't master the basics of arranging fully, and the completion of tasks is challenging.
Satisfactory 2
The student knows the basics of arranging, but demanding tasks completion is challenging. All arrangements are not so fluent in practice.

Good 3
The student has a thorough knowledge how to write in different styles. He/She knows how to apply the knowledge and skill in different situations.
Praiseworthy 4
Apart form the Good (3) Criteria, the student has a vision of how the written text should sound and the means to achieve this.
Arranging:
Good 3
The student knows the necessary skills in arranging. He/She can apply different techniques in a work. The sample works are executable.
Praiseworthy 4
Apart from the Good (3) Criteria, the sdudent has a many-sided control of the skills needed in arranging. Application in work of diverse techniques many-sidedly and can develop own solutions for problems. Personal initiative is used in acquisition of knowledge and skills.

Excellent 5
The student has fairly developed knowledge and skills in different styles. He/She also knows how to apply it fluently and creatively. They are able to write fluently in exceptional and problematic harmonic and contrapuntal situations. Almost flawless music writing.
Arranging:
Excellent 5
The student knows the techniques of arrangement, possess special techniques and comprehend the broader wholes. He/She is able to develop solutions for special problems. He/She is able to use different means creatively. The arrangements are natural and easily made for use.
