Key learning outcomes

The degree provides the student with the skills and knowledge to work in development, supervisory and managerial duties that require special expertise. The student is familiar with the latest technological solutions in their field, is able to develop new products, services and business, and knows how to operate in an entrepreneurial way. The student is able to utilise new knowledge related to the management and sustainability of the energy business and to develop their own competence and that of their organisation to a high standard of quality. The student is able to respond to rapid changes in the industry, create and analyse new operating models, and develop business and processes with due consideration given to various aspects of sustainability.

Education content and professional growth and know-how

The studies include advanced professional studies, elective studies and a thesis, or a working-life development assignment. The studies consist of courses and wider competence areas. The structure of the studies (60 credits) is as follows:

Shared master competence: Research-based Development (5 credits)

Expert core competence (50 credits):
- Energy Business Development module (20 credits): Management studies Leadership Dynamics (5 credits); Future Energy Solutions and Business (5 credits); Environment, Safety and Resource Efficiency (5 credits); Development of Models for Energy Products and Services (5 credits) OR Managerial Accounting (5 credits)
- Master’s thesis (30 credits)

Complementary competence (5 credits): As elective studies, the students will choose courses from the offering of the degree programme or from the offerings of JAMK’s other master's degree programmes or other universities of applied science.

Flexible studies

The education will be provided in the from of part-time studies. The majority of the studies take place online and by completing distance assignments. However, the studies also include regular classroom teaching sessions on a monthly basis.

Students have a choice of alternative or elective studies offered by partner universities in Finland and abroad, such as other universities of applied sciences (CampusOnline), universities and educational institutions involved in the EduFutura collaboration (University of Jyväskylä and Gradia). Higher level studies completed elsewhere may be accredited as part of your degree. The student must have a certificate or some other document to prove that they have completed the studies. Skills acquired elsewhere can also be described and demonstrated to enable accreditation. Further information is available in the Study Guide.

Working life oriented learning

During the courses, cooperation with companies is utilised in the form of e.g. visiting lecturers and potential company visits. The studies involve the sharing of one’s own competence gained in working life with the rest of the group, making it possible to build networks within the group.

The learning tasks included in the courses can, and are even recommended to, be completed in the student’s own work community. Many work community development tasks can also be taken up to be planned, refined and resolved as learning tasks.

A personal study path can be built for the studies by utilising the offerings of JAMK’s master's degree programmes and CampusOnline.

In the field of technology, the master's thesis is often a research-based working life development assignment. It makes up one-half of the credits required for the degree and provides opportunities to develop one’s own competence and further one’s personal career goals.

Career opportunities and employment

Master’s degree studies in the field of energy only started at JAMK in 2019, so no statistics and experience on the employment or career advancement of graduates are available yet. The programme is pursued by engineers and other experts from different sectors who either already work or wish to work with energy-related matters. The students’ present and especially future work duties relate to the energy business and its development, managerial work or demanding expert duties in the public or private sector. The graduate has also gained competencies to work as an entrepreneur in the sector.

Qualifications

There are no specific degree-related or statutory qualification requirements in the field.

Further studies

The graduate may apply to continue on to postgraduate studies in science or arts at universities (Act 558/2009, Section 37) and in the school of professional teacher education. Studies can be continued by applying for corresponding post-degree education at universities abroad, for example. A university of applied sciences also provides opportunities for continuing education in the form of specialisation studies, open studies, an online study portal (CampusOnline) and working life based continuing education.

Education planning

The education has been planned in close collaboration with working life representatives. The content of the degree programme has been discussed in forums such as the energy technology advisory board.
