Teaching methods

This course is taught by an events specialist from Canada who has created and run over 1,000 events in tourism and not for profit business. The teaching methodology employs experiential learning. This means you will learn the skill set required to create and the experiential aspect is that students will collaborate in teams to develop their own plan for an event that excites them. The course encompasses the skill sets of: Idea Generation, Mind's Eye Modelling; Beachhead Targeting and Segmentation; External and Internal Environmental Analysis; Goal Setting; Event Positioning; Integrated Marketing Communications and Sales, Risk Management, Operations Planning and Basic budgeting.

Teaching methods

This course uses an experiential and applied method of learning by doing. Students will work in teams to create their own unique event concept and event plan. The course starts with creativity and design thinking that will link marry passion with an opportunity to create a viable event. Student teams will identify event program components and quantify the beachhead market needed to make this event viable. The construction of the customer journey during the event will enable student teams to build out the integrated marketing and sales strategies and sponsorships. Finally student teams will develop an operations plan including risk management strategies, staging requirements, logistics planning and performance measures. The course finishes with creative presentations of their event plans.

The course will start on Tuesday Feb 14 0800
The first two weeks of the course will have two lectures per week on Tuesday 0800-10130 and Thursday 1700-1915. After the winter break, there will be one class per week held Tuesdays 0800-1030. The final two weeks of the course shall revert to two classes per week as per the above schedule.

Teaching methods

Course Objectives:
This course will cover the following content including:
• Examining the relevance of events planning to the world of business including private, public and not-for-profit sectors
• Identifying unique features of events as they pertain to the marketing process
• Learning how to design events
• Investigating the role of competitive positioning, targeting and consumer segmentation
• Learning the components of an event business plan
• Developing event financial forecast for revenues and expenses
• Formulating an event business plan in collaboration with a client from the local community and integrating all of the components of an events business plan

This course is experiential where you shall work in cohort group of 4-5 to create and plan an event. You will learn basic theory and as we learn the theory, you will apply it to the construction of an event business plan.

Exam dates and retake possibilities

There will be two small tests during the term and there will be no final exam.

Alternative completion methods

This a course that requires face to face participation working in teams. If a student cannot participate in the lectures and the team work, the course cannot be implemented individually.

This Event Management Course will be divided into three parts:

1. Theoretical
2. Practical
3. Presentations

Part 1.
We will learn in theory what is event management. Different theories, different topics and different practices.

Part 2.
We will do a small group work to apply your knowledge into the action. This group assignment will be introduced in the course.

Part 3.
All groups will present their group works. This part is compulsory for all students.

In total we will have approx. 27 x 1,5 hours lectures.

Grading is based on the group work (50 %) and exam (50%)
