Objective

Purpose of the course
In this course, you will get to know the Let´s talk about children (LTC)-method and learn to use it when working with families with children in social and health services.

Competences of the course
Competence in guidance, interaction skills and supporting self-care: Assesses the needs and resources of the client/patient and recognizes his/her own responsibility in planning guidance and supporting self-care.
Knowledge of health promotion: Identifies and assesses the health risk factors of clients/patients and knows how to target early support to those who need it.
Functioning in working life: Can act professionally in communication and interaction situations in working life.

Competence goal of the course
After attending the course, you will be able to carry out the Let´s talk about children (TLC)- discussion and use the log book in the TLC-process when working with the family. You know how to talk with families about children's development and the importance of developmental environments for the child's growth and well-being. In conversation, you can identify families' needs for support and talk with families based on resources. If necessary, you know how to organize a TLC-consultation and work as a member or leader of a multi-professional working group. You know how to map the key factors in the child's and family's life and work in multiprofessional cooperation based on the family's needs.

Qualifications

You figure out the goals and methods of promoting the health of families in the field of services for families with children. You have an understanding of multi-professional cooperation in the education, social and health sectors. You have experience in working with clients or families through internship or work experience.

You can use the Let´s talk about children log books and support the family in the Let´s talk about children-process.
You are able to discuss with families about child´s development and you recognize the importance of developmental environments for child´s growth and well-being.
You demonstrate that you know how to identify families' support needs and talk with families based on their strengths.
You demonstrate that you recognize the key participants in family life in different services.

Time and location

Contact teaching is carried out via Zoom as online teaching.
During the semester, there are six contacts lasting 3 hours each. The contacts are scheduled in the early evening so that as many people as possible can participate in them alongside other studies and internships.
Teaching is functional, conversational and contains exercises.

Teaching methods

In online contact teaching, you will get to know the Let´s Talk About Children-method and the materials used in it.
Through experiential learning, you will practice LTAC-discussions and working in LTAC-process.
Practical training is done in pairs and small groups through case work and independently carried out LTAC- discussions.
You will use evidence-based material in independent work and group discussions to support your own and collective reflection.
Learning diary work process supports reflection throughout the course.

Practical training and working life connections

Discussions can be practiced in connection with internships, if it is possible during the course

Exam dates and retake possibilities

The course does not include exams.
Three assignments to be done independently, the return of which is at regular intervals during the course period.
Learning diary working process goes hand in hand throughout the entire course.
