Objectives

Objective of the course
Vectors and matrices is one of the alternative courses in applied mathematics. In this course you focus your skills on particularly mathematics needed in 3D programming but after completing the course you will also identify other ranges of uses for vector and matrix calculus in the field of information and communication technology.

Course competences:
EUR-ACE Knowledge and Understanding
- knowledge and understanding of scientific mathematical principles in information and communication technology
- knowledge and understand of engineering sciences in one's own field of specialisation on a level that makes it possible to also reach the results in the degree program, including a view on the future requirements in one's own field.
EUR-ACE Engineering Practice
- understanding of the applied techniques and methods as well as their limitations

Content

Notion of vector, basic operations, dot product and cross (vector) product, vector projection, defining line and plane by vectors, definition of matrix, basic operations, determinant, inverse matrix (rotation, scaling, transfer), orthogonal matrix, homogeneous coordinates, transformations between coordinate systems. Applications of concepts and operations in particular in 3D programming but also in other fields of information technology.

Time and location

The course will take place at the Lutakko campus (Dynamo-building) as a contact course at the time marked to the course.

The course has 80% compulsory to attend contact teaching. All absences from contact teaching must be compensated in the manner indicated at the beginning of the course.

Some weeks may include distance learning depending on the availability of Dynamo's classrooms.

The exact schedule of the course will be agreed at the beginning of the course and published in the learning environment.

Learning materials and recommended literature

Literary and video material distributed by the teacher in the learning environment.

Teaching methods

Weekly contact teaching, tutorials, independent work.

Weekly exercises to be returned
Weekly tests in the learning environment
Other coursework and assignments

Recordings are available for independent study and recapping

Exam dates and retake possibilities

There are the course exam and its two resits, which are held in Exam Studio platform.
The dates of the exam and retakes on what time the Exam Studio exam is available will be published in the learning environment at the beginning of the course.

The course will end when the exam period on Exam Studio has ended. After this date, course assignments are non-returnable and incomplete courses must be re-taken in their entirety at the next course implementation.

Alternative completion methods

The procedures for admission are described in the Degree Regulations and the Study Guide. The course teacher provides further information on any specific procedures for the course if needed.

Student workload

The estimated workload of the course is 3 cr * 27 h/cr = 81 h.

Contact teaching and guiding approx. 30 h
Exercises, returnable weekly exercises and tests 6 x 2 h = 36 h
Independent study, recap, recap assignments and exam preparation 12 h
Examination 3 h

Further information for students

Assessment methods:
The course is assessed by exam, returnable weekly exercises, weekly tests and other assignments. These exercises will be graded.

For successful course completion at least half of the maximum points for the whole course and at least 40% of the maximum points from the examination are required.

The assessment criteria and the assignments to be assessed will be presented in the first lesson of the course and in the learning environment.
