Objective
Music History 1:
The student knows Western Music's main styles,tendencies, personalities and types from the Antique to the beginning of the 19th Century. The student is able to place the musical historical phenomena within a broader cultural and social context.
Musical Analysis 1:
The student knows the structural principles of the main composition forms from Gregorian Chant to the Classical Period. He/She understands their background and are able to explain analytically the totality outlined.
Solfege 1:
The student knows the style characteristics of Western Music's stylistic periods through listening and writing and is capable of rendering them by singing from a score.
Content
Music History 1:
Western Music's phenomena as part of the historic and cultural changes from the Antique to the beginning of the 19th Century. Musical style features, composers and central forms.
Musical Analysis 1:
Composition forms in Western Music from Gregorian Chant to the Classical Period. Divided into three parts: a) Old music's composition forms, b) Baroque composition forms and c) Composition forms in the Classical Period.
Solfege 1:
Each period's main phenomena as applied to singing, listening and writing. Middle Ages: church modes as manifested in melody, Gregorian Chant, other art songs, part voice writing's beginnings and development, dance music.
Renaissance: Vocal polyphony, Church mode harmony, instrumental music.
Classical Style: Melody, harmony and transition to Romanticism.
Qualifications
Music History 1:
The student knows the basic concepts of Western Music comparable to the music school D-level. Accepted level examination (entrance exam)or corresponding optional basic studies
Musical Analysis 1:
The student knows Western Music's basic concepts at the music institute level. Satisfactory completion of music-school level theory (early studies) and/or 50% of the maximum points in entrance exam, theory. In other cases, satisfactory completion of course in Elements of Theory
Solfege 1:
The students know the basic concepts of melody and harmony in Western Music as applied to listening, singing and writing
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Music History 1 consists of three literary (50%) and three listening exams (50%).
Excellent 5
The student knows the meaning of music history periods in such a way as to realize how music has developed up to the present. He/She understands the diverse styles studied,techniques and terminology and their background causes.
Praiseworthy 4
Apart from the Good (3) level, the student is familiar with several composers and their works and background and are able to impart knowledge when needed.
Good 3
The student recognizes stylistic trends and the most important techniques and terminology used in the periods studied. They are familiar with the main composers,their backgrounds and historical frame associated with them. They have aural knowledge of music history's main works.
Satisfactory 2
The student is able to identify the main stylistic trends of music history's different stages. He/She is able to name the main composers and command the special music history terminology.
Passable 1
The student knows some musical periods from Music History and is able to name some composers. He/She knows some terminology in Music History.
Fail 0
The course fails when the minimal requirements are not met.

The students have advanced knowledge skills in their command of diverse music periods' analysis. They are able to analyze also exceptional and/or problematic works.
Praiseworthy 4
They are able to comprehend broadly the structure of the work from micro forms to the large whole. They are also able to impart knowledge forward if necessary.
Good 3
The students know the main structural principles of composition form and are able to use their knowledge in analysis. They are acquainted with each period's composition forms and are able to figure out not only the form structures but the harmonic structures as well.
Satisfactory 2
The students command the elements of analysis. They figure out the structural sections from reading the score. They know the main composition forms of the style in question and know the differences obtaining among them.
Passable 1
They participate in the lessons and are able to complete the assignments.
