Bachelor's Degree Programme in Energy and Environmental Technology
Key learning outcomes
Companies working with developing energy systems need experts for responsible and significant work tasks. Climate change mitigation, the green transition and the management of the environmental impacts of processes require versatile competence in natural sciences and technical solutions.
After completing the degree programme in Energy and Environmental Engineering, you have strong and versatile competence in natural sciences and competence in process, energy, electrical and automation technology, which you know how to apply in energy and environmental engineering solutions. You are familiar with how the energy production and distribution and the technical processes of industry and properties work. You can assess, analyse, plan and develop processes and transdisciplinary modules, taking into account the energy and resource efficiency of solutions during their entire life cycle.
Education content and professional growth and know-how
Key themes of your studies include energy production and renewable energy solutions, process, electrical and automation engineering, resource efficiency and circular economy, sustainable development, and environmental impacts and their management.
You get a strong foundation in natural sciences, understand the physical basics of thermodynamics and heat transfer, and apply them in technical solutions. You understand climate policy, its instruments and how the energy market works. You understand modern energy production technologies and their development. You are also familiar with the environmental impacts of energy technology processes and are able to develop their management. In addition, you can plan, scale and develop energy-efficient processes and solutions.
You learn the basics of project work and apply your competence in working life-orientated projects commissioned by companies.
In addition to common studies, you can specialise in the development of energy efficiency in properties or deepen your competence in energy production. In addition, you can supplement your studies with competence modules in biorefining and maintenance.
Flexible studies
You can study as full-time or part-time studies. Independent studying on a flexible schedule is the main point of part-time studies. At the beginning of your studies, a personal learning plan (PLP) is prepared for you, in connection with which previously acquired competence is assessed. Your studies include lectures and online lectures, calculation exercises, laboratory work, group work and exams.
You can choose your alternative or elective studies from EduFutura partner institutions (University of Jyväskylä and Gradia) and international studies from European EUDRES higher education institutions. You can also choose from Finnish and foreign partner universities, such as other universities of applied sciences and universities. You can apply for accreditation of higher education studies that you have completed elsewhere.
Working life oriented learning
During your studies, you get to know the work tasks in your field during the 5-month practical training period. You can complete the practical training in one or two periods.
Companies operating in the energy sector participate in the education by giving expert lectures, providing topics for project work and offering visits to various technical sites.
The scope of your thesis is 15 credits, and the work is done independently for companies in the field. After completing the thesis, you know how to apply the acquired information and skills in expert tasks related to vocational studies. You are able to work independently and with a goal-oriented approach and have the critical thinking skills, ability and creativity to solve challenges.
Career opportunities and employment
After graduating, you can work in tasks applying energy and environmental technology in the development of processes, product development and expert tasks. Typically, such work is available in process and technology industries as well as energy production, distribution and sales companies. The education also provides you with good skills to work in development tasks related to the energy efficiency in real estate or industry, in planning and consulting offices and in research organisations.
Qualifications
After completing your education in energy and environmental technology and two years of work experience, you will have also completed the theoretical qualifications required to serve as a supervisor of pressure equipment.
As a Bachelor of Energy and Environmental Engineering, you can obtain the qualifications of an author of the energy certificate for properties and the qualifications of an energy reviewer.
Further studies
You may, after graduating and gaining at least two years of work experience, apply for a master's degree level education. You can continue your studies by applying for e.g. Master's degree programmes in universities, vocational teacher education or Master's degree programmes abroad. The university of applied sciences offers opportunities for competence development in various institutes, such as the open university of applied sciences, specialisation training and work-oriented continuing education.
Education planning
When developing the curriculum, information on the competences needed in working life has been collected directly from the specialists of the business network in the field, and future competence needs in the field have been studied. Student representatives and alumni have participated in the development of the degree programme together with companies. In addition, continuous student feedback from teaching has been utilised in the development of the curriculum.
